Llewellyn, M. A., Tilak, K. S., and Swyer, P. R. (1970). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 45, 453. A controlled trial of assisted ventilation using an oro-nasal mask. A controlled study was performed to assess the effect of early assisted ventilation using a tight fitting face mask. Early mask ventilation reduced the number of infants requiring intubation, but did not significantly alter the survival rate. Complications were seen in infants during both mask ventilation and ventilation with a naso-tracheal tube. Persistent radiological changes were seen in 5 of 9 infants who survived after ventilation for more than 5 days..

The Effect of Using Different Aerosol Devices and Masks on Aerosol Deposition during Noninvasive Positive Pressure Ventilation in an Adult Lung Model
Introduction: Although patients with an acute increase in airflow resistance may require aerosol therapy and noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV), the efficiency of different aerosol devices and masks during NIPPV is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of a jet nebulizer (JN), a vibrating mesh nebulizer (VMN) and a pressurized metered-dose...
متن کاملEarly Nasal Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV) versus Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (NCPAP) for Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) in Infants of 28-36 weeks gestational age: a Randomized Controlled Trial
Background: Early nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) has emerged as a primary modality of respiratory support for preterm infants withrespiratory distress syndrome (RDS). However, 30%-40% of these newborns need subsequent mechanical ventilation. Nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) is a promising alternative to NCPAP, especially in po...
متن کاملNasal Mask Versus Nasal Prongs for Delivering Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure in Preterm Infants with Respiratory Distress: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
OBJECTIVE To compare the effectiveness of nasal continuous positive airway pressure delivered by Nasal mask vs Nasal prongs with respect to continuous positive airway pressure failure. STUDY DESIGN Randomized, controlled, open label, trial. SETTING Tertiary care level III neonatal unit. PARTICIPANTS 118 preterm infants-gestational age (27-34 weeks) requiring nasal continuous positive airw...
متن کاملSudden Complete Versus Gradual Weaning from Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure in Preterm Neonates: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Background: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is used as respiratory support in preterm neonates; however, the best weaning method has not yet been determined. In this study, we compared sudden complete and gradual weaning from nasal CPAP (NCPAP) in preterm newborns. Methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted on 62 prete...
متن کاملVentilator-assisted preoxygenation: Protocol for combining non-invasive ventilation and apnoeic oxygenation using a portable ventilator.
OBJECTIVE To describe a simple protocol for ventilator-assisted preoxygenation (VAPOX) prior to rapid sequence intubation in the ED using a Hamilton T1 ventilator in an effort to further reduce the incidence of transient and critical hypoxaemia. METHODS Ventilator-assisted preoxygenation includes the following steps; preparation for rapid sequence intubation as per institutional protocols, in...
